“I was startled by the resemblance of this frieze to the series of ranunculus that I had been painting every day for 6 months, after finding myself mesmerized by their yellow-orange glow at my mother's table. These flowers are enchanting, the subtle variations of colors as each of the little petals captures the light in a different way, from the cooler outer edges to the vivid masses of petal and then to the center of the flowers, trying to make the soft and crisp edges of watercolor create an illusion that is like gazing at the flowers. The compositions are a combination of direct observation and of borrowing left and right, shaping the meandering stems and curly leaves, at times with the ranunculus standing as if in a vase or a garden, at times swirling freely in space of the paper.”

“The film ROMAN STUDIO features my models and me, in Rome, and answers questions like: ‘What is it like to be a life model?’
My models are extraordinary people, expressive and courageous, ordinarily silent and still: I wanted to share what they are thinking, feeling, wondering as they pose. I wanted to show the exciting way watercolor marks can reveal in an instant figures, gestures, moods. The intertwining of artist and model in transforming reality into art, before it vanishes… I have been holding on to these favorite figures for the many years it has taken to edit the film and am very happy to finally have them on display.”

“Alongside the figures are pictures of statues – models both for poor artists and also for Roman youth – as Tony Allotta says in the film, "we Italians are educated by statues and not by our parents". In ROMAN STUDIO ART there are large monochromatic watercolors of the Campidoglio's 2nd century BC river gods the Nile and the Tiber, and two giant charcoal drawings of the river gods from the Piazza Navona that hang on the studio wall in the film.”
